Paperless-ngx is genuinely powerful and free — but it's a server you run. The real question isn't which tool is "better." It's whether you want to run infrastructure, or just get your documents organized.

What each one actually is

Paperless-ngx is a self-hosted document management system, and a very good one. It's open-source and free. It performs OCR on your scans with Tesseract in over 100 languages, which makes the text inside every document full-text searchable, and it uses machine learning to auto-tag incoming documents with correspondents and document types. In its own words, it's an AI document intelligence system that lives in your infrastructure. The catch is right there in that sentence: it needs infrastructure. A proper install runs under Docker with several supporting services — a PostgreSQL database, Redis, and Tika/Gotenberg for parsing — sitting on a server, a VPS, or an always-on home machine, usually Linux, that you keep patched and running.

DocAttic is not a server at all. It's a simple desktop app for Windows and Linux that runs entirely on the computer you already have. There's no server, no Docker, no database, and no setup. If what you actually have is a decade of scans, PDFs and receipts scattered across your drives, and what you actually want is for them to be gathered, de-duplicated, and filed by year into ordinary folders — on the computer you already have, without becoming a part-time sysadmin — then DocAttic is the better fit.
